I thought this thread would be bombarded with ONLY frivolous replies, and when I saw it wasn't, I thought mine would be the first...

I also thought, "Ok, geek away from home, asking a bunch of other geeks in possibly the most unsocial profession in the world, what to do at night...yeah, this is going to go soooo well".

So OP, I must also question why you didn't scope at the area in advance, why you don't simply try to replicate what you do for fun at home, or why it hasn't occurred to you, purely from a health perspective, that if you're going to spend 37.5 hours slaving over a screen to make money, it's generally a good idea not to continue looking at a screen (as opposed to reconnecting with human beings who actually prefer to communicate with other human beings) when you aren't making money.

Find open mic pubs. Free live music and more good acts than rubbish usually.

If you're stuck for a book to read, I recommend this collection of Arthur C Clarke short stories. It's great for filling in anywhere between five minutes and an hour. You can download it to Kindle for PC or Kindle for >insert smart phone of choice here<. I love that book - it's old timey and modern at one in the same time.

Post trash on a contracting site laying the smackdown on poor unsuspecting posters.

and Gentile was combing her long blonde hair in her bedside mirror. "Oh how lucky she thought" to herself. Her profile had only been on ScottishSingles.com for an evening and already she'd bagged herself a date. Who would have thought a famous millionaire musician lived just down the road and had offered to take her out for a slap up meal. I wonder if Mr ClipHead could be the one?

Cinema, theatre, pubs, clubs, restaurants, ukelele nights.

I've been using the time to catch up with old mates.

Unfortunately I'm stuck indoors this evening and the person I'm renting a room off doesn't seem to be aware I can hear him singing out of tune to dodgy europop.

Try being social with contractors on site and see if they fancy a beer after work? Theres between 3-5 contractors here and usually atleast 2 come out for a steak, a beer and a chat.

Or, sign up for World of Warcraft or your other favourite online game and just make sure to set an alarm for work.

Become a local at a half decent bar, chat to the bar staff, it becomes a local away from home.

Think of and develop plan b.

Read a good book without being disturbed.

Start running. A pair of trainers and kit and you can continue your pastime/sport/hobby anywhere u work AND you get to see the local scenary.

Catch up with paperwork freeing up more time at home.

See the local sights/museums/theatres, the lonely planet is always good for tips if the local bar staff cant suggest anything.

Oh check up the latest and post on CUK.

Personally, although I love being home, I find theres always too many things to do when away to get bored.
