Anyway the facts are these, total UK debt per capita is in the top 3 in the world, Germany's isn't.
    Our prosperity is illusory.
I don't understand why so many of you fawning sheep fall over yourselves in order to extol the so called virtues of the Germans.
Anyone remember two world wars? reminder - the Germans lost. -Both of them.

I just demonstrated that US protectionism worked for it.
Which part of that are you disputing and why?

We are 1 trillion in debt. It suggests the government is spectacularly poor at investing appropriately.

It took the rest of the world to do it. Germany is only slightly bigger than Britain. Clealry they have some sort of excellence built in to their culture, if a complete lack of morality.

First of all i never said steel in the US was uncompetitive.

Secondly, the biggest consumer of steel during WWII, was.......(Drumroll) The US government.

And they were rather bankrupt at the end of that war.

But following your logic, protectionism would have led to more expensive steel would it not? Since there was no foreign competition.
Like most of the rest of the congregation, I'm struggling to understand your point if you have one.

Really? The US was bankrupt after that war? Are you implying that was because of expensive steel?

How could they afford the Marshall plan then?

You may be confusing 'investing' with 'spending'. Agreed that governments have wasted a lot of money, but somehow I don't think we're in debt because of making investments in industry or infrastructure; probably more to do with spending money on ever growing operational costs, and, lest I forget, rescuing private sector banks.

I have news for you. Britain didn't win any of the two world wars.
