I was reading a bit more about their equipment on their website last night. It appears they've thought about this problem that normal reserve chutes have. They've designed their reserve to be a cut-away design (like a regular main chute is), so he could just release it if he accidentally deployed it at too high an altitude.Originally posted by OwlHoot View PostCouldn't this have a lightweight lock, based on a spring-loaded piston for example, which prevents the toggle from being pulled until a "safe" altitude of say 20,000 feet is reached, at which point atmospheric pressure pushes the piston back past a certain point?
If not, I'll whump up a design in five minutes and apply for Dragon's Den. The snag is I imagine there's rather limited demand for high-altitude parachute gear.
Whew! After consigning Max Bygraves to the grave a few weeks ago by dreaming of his death, I'd have hated to have done for this guy as well by suggesting a potential way for his demise only for it to subsequently happen!Comment

That's not a lot of time to get free from a tangled main parachute and deploy your reserve at a safe height if need be. I think Joe Kittinger (existing highest jump record holder at 76,000ft) automatically deployed his main chute about 10,000ft : twice the height this guy will be aiming for.Originally posted by Doggy Styles View PostHe will have slowed down by 1500m.

I can't believe nobody else thought of that since they started planning this seven years ago. You should let them know it might be a problemOriginally posted by alreadypacked View PostHow can they be sure they can slow him down enough after 23 miles of freefall

I would prefer to know where they are going to be landing so I can be sure I am not underneath.Originally posted by NickFitz View PostI can't believe nobody else thought of that since they started planning this seven years ago. You should let them know it might be a problem
