    Strangely they had a hard time finding anyone to take them up.........

          This is tax avoidance (and not even a smart one) for the companies. They pay tax, NI and holiday pay for the first 8 hours (that is, nothing) then declare the remaining hours as "extra".
          <Insert idea here> will never be adopted because the politicians are in the pockets of the banks!

            I don't get it. Every hour paid through PAYE has to have NI. Doesn't it?

              Yes but you have different rates:
              HM Revenue & Customs: National Insurance Contributions

              If you work 40 hours for £10 an hour but your employer declares 8 hours @6 pph and the rest is "extra", that's where the avoidance is.

              In most case this goes unnoticed as it is also in the interest of the slave worker to pay less NI but when it all comes out when they check their payslip and they receive no or little holiday pay.

              There are tens of cases like these on the consumer forums.
