Most of our new found Olympic success in cycling has been down to the application of multiple marginal gains.

To apply that to football, with a squad of 25, each with different requirements/roles would be quite a task, and IMO require central contracts.

Clive Woodward managed to do it with the Rugby squad, but there's too much money in the EPL to allow the FA to do it with footy.

True, and cricket benefits from central contracts as well.

We'll never, ever, get that with soccer, so there's little hope for England winning anything in the foreseeable future. Unless they bring back the British Home Championship.

I was listening to Robbie Savage and Martin Keown chatting to Jake Humphries about this exact point and the general jist was that as this was the first time that Tesm GB had competed in the Olympics at footy it was not really high on anyones list of things to win.

Now though and especially due to the requirement to have young players in the squad they feel there will be a greater desire to perform better.

so give it a few years and Team GB will have a footy team to challenge for medals...

Somehow FIFA have moved our ranking up to 3rd today. And we are also 3rd in the Olympics rankings.

          Time to close this thread.

No, no, they phoned to say 'ze English footballers are turd' and somebody misunderstood them.
And what exactly is wrong with an "ad hominem" argument? Dodgy Agent, 16-5-2014

No. We really are 3rd. From bottom.

Turd from bottom would make a lot more sense.

I'm not much of a footy fan in all honesty, I just see them as overpaid pansies but there we go. But I find it ridiculous that so many people follow it when you can clearly see the majority of them (Football players) are just there to pick up a nice fat cheque, there's no pride and no passion for certain well established clubs it used to be the putting on the jersey/shirt was all that was needed to inspire and enthuse but that seems to have disappeared.

They're just humans like you or me. Do you go to work for the pride and passion? I ******* well don't.

they may have done back in the day but since the epl got off and running and more and more money was pumped into the game there is more of a money grabbing attitude.

but so that will be like in any walk of life if you are good at your choosen proffesion you want to be amongst the top earners.

however... if you got to represent Team GB at this year Super SQL Coders Convention - how much effort would you put in?
