I think some people are just annoying exhibitionists.

I would have thought no. In the tradition of cuk this is just a wild guess.

BTW Mich - all this talk of gays is making the lesbians feel left out. Got any totty piccies to cheer them up?

The majority of gay people in my experience can camp it up. I believe it's a choice, as you say, being an exhibitionist.

When I left Uni I lodged with a gay couple for a few years. One you would never know, the other was a raving queen. On Saturday nights they'd go out clubbing to the gay bars(I'd sometimes go with them as it was a nice vibe) or I'd head out on the piss/pull with mates.

2am in the morning I'd return(If I'd not pulled), kebab in hand, they'd always be in the front room with some friends or other watching films & trying to come down from whatever they'd taken that evening. I'd be camply abused 'Oh here comes Neandathal man, look at his knuckles dragging, did you pull MF?'.

Camping it up, is purely learned. Trust me, I can now camp it up better than Quentin Crisp in a tutu if I want to.

Is that what they called it?

Nobody was in any doubt on that score.

How did you learn it MF?

Although, it's no great surprise, there nothing wrong with it at all, fair play to you for coming out mate.

Sure I heard/read somewhere that it is partly a throwback to broadcast the preference of the individual which has morphed into an adopted manner.....

It may be natural. I mean there are gay penguins and swans, and so forth. But the question is are any of them camp, as another penguin would perceive it? Trouble is it must be so hard to tell. Maybe they waddle slightly differently or waggle their tails more.
