I've used one (although loathed to call it a man bag) for ages and the are only really a variation on having a brief case. I have my eye on the Barbican Hard Leather from Brooks:

    Brooks - England

That said, it's only now used during the week as a wallet is sufficient for the weekend.

It's almost inevitable that if you carry some kind of bag you're going to end up stuffing it full of crap you don't need like yesterday´s newspaper (and the day before), that dull trade magazine you picked up when you went for a dump at clientco's office, some empty mars bar wrappers and some extra strong mints going all rank in the bottom and when you do want to put something useful in it there won't be enough space. Just don't bother with bags and you won't bother with tulip you don't need.
      you've got one haven't you?

But surely the only reason for carrying a bag is to transport things "off-site" for "safe storage" (toilet rolls, pens, paper, staplers, secretaries, etc.)?

No, this is the experience of owning a laptop bag. I also own sports bags and played rugby for a long time. Some people in rugby clubs have a strange habit of removing soiled plasters and bandages and dumping them in other people's bags while they're under the shower. yuk

I have a smart French leather one of these with a heavy duty shoulder strap.

Usually carry my lunch, water bottle and a paper to work (keep my phone, wallet and keys in my pocket). I see plenty of people carrying them around the city so it's not an fashion disaster

Do I see a non sequitur here?

There is a desktop support fella in this office who as a utility belt, and he carries everything with him, ask him for anything and he will wip it out, network cables, screwdrivers, socket set, you name it he has it, he had a bit of a clear down once but it now seems to be filling up again, more manly than a bag.

Oh!!! I forgot to mention, he also wears a long trench coat a wide brimmed hat and he has a sonic screwdriver

                  Are they ok?
They seem to be quite popular in some european countries.

However do you need to carry the ipad and a bottle of water round with you at all times?
Get yourself a phone you can use for any immediate browsing needs and learn to go more than 5 minutes without having a sip of water

and get a smaller wallet... bank notes do fold and you don't need every bank and credit card with you

If you're taking it to work and back then no

If you insist having it with you at all times, even when going out at the weekend and then dacing round it, then yes
