I hate to be a pedant - but is "whoosh whoosh" the correct onomatopoeia for Skiing?

If you're planning on making a habit of it, buy some decent boots, 200 quid should cover it, make sure they're heat moulded to your foot size, any shop will
know what im on about. They're worth there weight in GOLD !!

Rest of the equipment, don't be too fussy or extravagant. Really is no point
when beginning and just hire skis for now.

It doesnt hurt that much. Nursery slopes tend not to be too dangerous. Though I know a couple of Austrian resorts where you have to negotiate a couple reds to get to the nursery.

Remember: In the early years, if you are not falling over you are not realy trying!

Where are you going?

A small resort called Rauris in Austria - apparently excellent for virgins like me ! Something like 10 blues, 5 reds and 1 black - I forget the numbers but it's that kind of proportion.
The ski school is "Karl Maier Skischule" which again apparently is OK (so the brochure tells me )

My only slight concern is that the resort is quite low (950m) and we are going early March - there had better be some damn snow !!!

Don't worry JD - Austria is well known for lower altitude (and pretty) resorts and late season snow.

If there is no snow then make the ski school hire a mini bus and ship you to Kaprun or Salbach which are just around the corner.
Austria is fantastic.
Try speaking a little German, it will get you a long way.
Learn Excuse me, I am English, I dont speak German and do you speak English.
That usualy helps.

Recomended menu items for luch. (apolofies for spelling).
Tiroler Grostle. Fried potatoes with onion and bacon often with fried egg.
Kaser Spatzle. Local thick pasta with melted cheese and fried onion.
Gulasche suppe. Surprisingly Gulash soup.
Leberkase. A slice off a giant hot dog.

For the sweet tooth.
Kaisershmarne. Pieces of thick pancake made with almonds and raisins served with either apple or red fruit compot. Lovely.
<edit>Almost forgot. Germ Knoedle. A large suet dumpling filled with plum jam served with custard sometimes. It looks like it has had an ashtray poured over it, but its jst poppy seeds realy. </edit>
