THis seems to be the norm of commerce in the UK. New customers or those who complain get all the good deals, loyal customers just get ripped off. A few years ago I found my broadband suppliers had a much cheaper rate than I was getting, complained and got it reduced. Always make a fuss!

This line about "loyal customers" is a misnomer. We are all customers. They set the price using whatever parameters they have and market forces. They also give their customer service people percentage ability to retain customers.
I got a quote last week that was less than half what my existing insurer wanted. Called them and they managed to lower their quote so it was only twice as much
I had a similar situation.
Direct Line Current Policy = £549
Direct Line renewal = 579
Insure.co.uk same policy details = £329 and I'll get over £25 back via quidco so £303.xx
I phoned Direct Line, told them about the "insure.co.uk" quote, they said they'd reduce my renewal to £449...
So, Insure.co.uk here I come. Via "Quidco" of course
