In IB at the moment and myself an some contractors got taken aside for a 'chat' this week, turned out to be nothing but as the door was being closed someone said 'is this a 10% cut meeting' and the manager looked at me and said 'we have not had one of those yet have we'.

Cut my rate in or inbetween contracts and I politely decline, they have the right to do it and I have the right to say no, if they press me for a reason I tell them that I run a business and I would have never have taken the proposed rate initially as it undervalues my skills and others on the market are willing to pay the initial rate.

A few years ago I got hit with a 15% cut and declined, went off and had a holiday, done a pretty interesting 3 month contract and ended up back at the rate cutting place for more than my initial rate.

I know everyone has different situations, kids, lack of warchests etc but they cut rates because most people let it happen, a lot of people in this industry need to grow a set of balls.

From a purely pragmatic business perspective, I would sooner take £400/day from a legitimate enterprise than £700/day from a gangster. The reason being, the gangster might not pay what he promised. A gangster does not feel constrained by law, or he has bought out the law, which amounts to the same thing.

Meanwhile back in the real world...

Proper gangsters (those who pay £700 daily) often have their own code and those of them that don't honour promises don't live long usually.

No what I'm saying is that £700 per day in IB's is a v. good rate (not the best) in IT but what happens is that the IBs these days are enticing the best contractors with the higher end rates when they know for certain that those contractors will be taking a 10% cut in 2 months time so really the rate is £630 per day but they aren't going to tell the contractor that and the contractor ends up fed up when he takes the cut 2 months after joining (or leaves).
