My previous gig was with a coffee machine company

        Profits are huge...

Make sure you get the right machine, have it serviced regular, use a decent water filter system into it and get decent beans!

Coffee shops are so 1990s! Move with the times man, think of the next big consumer thing, if you want to be selling to the man on the street.

Besides, with global austerity (word of the year), people will cut down spending on luxuries like a £3 coffee each day.

Oh, I bought my own fitted Bosch coffee machine. Cost around a grand but grinds beans and makes me a lovely cup o' coffee. In the 2 years I've had it, I've easily saved more than I would have spent in Costa-lot Coffee or Star-lotsofbucks.

Suggest you go ask on ukbusinessforums.co.uk, bound to find people with an idea of costings, etc.

Me and the Mrs had talked about a coffee shop. The few coffee shops in town are always packed in the daytime with mums 'n babies nattering away all day. None of them are particularly kiddle friendy though and the one out of town place that IS geared for kids (jungle climbing thing) does a roaring trade but is a bit of a drive to get to.

So we reckoned a mums 'n bubs friendly coffee place with soft play area and stuff in town would be kerchiiing.

Only problem is we haven't a clue how to run a coffee shop (or any kind of shop) and i'm guessing its a lot of graft to make one work.

Just cause you don't know how to run a shop isn't a barrier. I've had 3.

Daltons is a good quick source of info. Once registered which is free, do a search of coffee shops. Top level turnover, rent, running costs are advertised on businesses for sale
And you can use this as a basis for a business model. If really serious visit a few pretending to be a buyer and ask for
                      Copies of their accounts.
What happens in General, stays in General.
You know what they say about assumptions!
