5 years now, with a slip 3 years ago, and in July 2010. Toughed it out with no aids. Finally, touch wood, think I have cracked it now. Can't walk past someone smoking without retching, and now knowing how bad a smoker smells, keeps me off the bad boys.

Good luck, best thing you'll do. I can cycle 100 miles now, albeit with a gallon of sudacream on my hearse and not being able to walk very well. But you know what I mean. I couldn't have cycled 10 miles before without needing an ambulance.

There is a chance of getting aids while quitting smoking?? **** that!! 20 marlboros please....

I think the cycling thing has more to do with your fitness level than directly attributable to smoking? Doesn't help I agree but isn't just the fags.

use the mints and/or gum. Ignore any thoughts about must not have nicotine in any form. The hard bit initially is to break the mental association with certain activities and smoking.
Get yourself nicel hooked on the mints and then you can cut down on those later.

I hope I don't need to. By the time I wake up on Thursday, I'll be into Day 4 and according to Joel at whyquit.com (thanks scoobos for the links) and other resources, my bloodstream is nicotine free and I should be over the worst of the withdrawal symptoms

          I fsckin' hope so anyways!

Actually TBH it's been pretty ok so far. Went to the pub for a pint tonight. I decided against a second pint due to risk of lack of willpower.

No, I agree. I guess it helps having clearer pipes, and the ability to breath a little deeper, without spilling a lung, but I used to have issues cycling a canal path, but now pop a 40 miler in when I have the time with no issues (apart from a hideously sore ass - what is it with these saddles the new road bikes have?). I also had the wish to get fitter, which stopped the fags, so I had the inspiration.

I did 32 miles on a mountain bike the other day, with big chunky tyres. I reckon that was like a 50-60 mile ride on a road bike. That did hurt.

              Keep going platypus

I had the strength of character to not start smoking in the first place.

You'd be surprised how much will power you have, if you really want to give up. Not having the second pint is being strong isn't it. I avoided all social contact with smoking friends for a month, as I knew I'd have issues. Tough, but I knew it would be the only way I could get through it.

                  Keep it up

It was de rigeur in my day. I think nearly everyone smoked. My dad would go through 40 a day, mum the same. You'd see teachers smoking, not in class, but you'd walk past the staff room and get asphyxiated. People smoked everywhere.

Sometimes I wonder how we thought some of the tulip we did was ok.
