Will there be a Grexit?

I'm not entirely sure what is expected in this case. The political class have to balance the interests of their own electorate (however poorly they do that) and contagion risk (Greece is just a small chip in the big picture) against the reality that the debt is unserviceable and that this may jeopardise their whole project, which not everyone is on board with anyway. The Euro project in its current shape is a mess, and would require fiscal discipline from all member states to function well; it worked to the benefit of debtor states for years, until the recession came. That fiscal discipline is unlikely to come, so realistically I see the debt being written off and a Grexit as the only real way forward, with a Northern European currency union supplanting the Euro. Yet none of them (including the IMF) want to be seen as pushing for Grexit, bar Schaeuble perhaps. They're doing their damnedest to keep up appearances, IMO.

Just 1,598,069,423 euros to go. I'm sure that's peanuts to some of you here.

If they had carried on and got donations at the same rate, it would have taken 18 years to clear the debt....

Summit turns into farce as Greeks turn up with no plans | The Times

It's like you have loaned a workshy relative 300 quid and when they refuse to pay it back you have to work out if the satisfaction in telling him to feck off is worth more than the money. But escalated to an international scale.

You could tell him to feck off but he'd batter you in front of your Dad, and nobody wants that. Better that you send him a stern and frank email telling him he won't be invited to any more pre-Christmas drinks.

It makes me laugh how many boys from working class areas go to uni, get an IT job and become keyboard warriors - and think they can look after themselves in a row.

I can see benefits - it would certainly reduce Greek public sector wages. And act as a devaluation.

But it is no good if the Greeks cannot collect their taxes!

              Thoughts?

Can you imagine if an entire nation used off shore schemes which had implemented exclusive and legal tax efficient schemes.
The people are rich but the country is poor. Looks like its all coming to an ugly end but I somehow doubt anything would change as long as billions are thrown at it by EU.

The Greeks aren't workshy they work harder than the Brits. It's just they keep 100% of their income, tax is optional there. Doctors will offer two prices for a procedure, one cheaper option in cash

It's beginning to dawn on them that giving them *loans* is optional as well...
