My theory:
Think the father has a taste of fame and wanted more, given he is a useless twat the only way he could become famous was by appearing as a national pity case, by killing all his children and making it look like someone else.

If they are guilty, then I suspect the motive was to get a better/bigger council house. Seems like they endured a fair bit of abuse since the stories about them aired so would be easy to shift blame elsewhare...
