I have to confess that the whole school dinner thing was a particularly traumatic chapter of my life.

The food was vile and the refectory was policed by a bunch of women whose job it was to ensure that every last scrap of the ordure that had been served up that day was duly consumed by those of us not fortunate enough to go home for dinner or bring packed lunches (I used to be SO jealous of the kids who brought sandwiches - they even had their own area in which to sit and I can remember the torture of hearing them cracking into their cans of coke and bursting open packs of Golden Wonder crisps as I sat facing yet another bowl of lumpy semolina).

I used to stuff what I could in my pockets so I could dispose of it down the bog later while things like semolina or custard would get "accidentally on purpose" spilled all over the floor.
Eventually I wised up and ended up sitting on the same table as the lads from the gypsy camp - they would actually queue up for second helpings of this crap - so they were more than happy for me to scrape whatever was on my plate onto theirs.

Anyhow, particular delights from the school canteen that still send shivers down my spine are:

The aforementioned semolina along with rice pudding and custard (both the yellow and pink varieties)
      Liver
      Heart
Brains (yes, really but only once)
Lumpy mashed potato served with an ice cream scoop
Mashed swede served in same manner as the above
Anything containing suet (i.e. all puddings except semolina etc)
Whatever they served that was supposed to pass muster as fish.

I'm feeling a little queasy now just thinking about this so toodle pip and feel free to add your school dinner horrors to the list!

She is now banned from taking photos.

BBC News - NeverSeconds blogger Martha Payne 'banned' from taking school dinner photos

            I like liver, but the rest are indeed awful. I'd add;

macaroni cheese with that nasty burnt cheese layer on top
            kedgeree

This morning in maths I got taken out of class by my head teacher and taken to her office. I was told that I could not take any more photos of my school dinners because of a headline in a newspaper today.
A sad day for freedom of speech.

Science isn't about why, it's about why not. You ask: why is so much of our science dangerous? I say: why not marry safe science if you love it so much. In fact, why not invent a special safety door that won't hit you in the butt on the way out, because you are fired. - Cave Johnson

Argyll and Bute Council has so far not responded to Martha's claim.

But in a statement released last month, it said: "Our school meal provision is fully compliant with nationally agreed nutritional standards.

"Young people make a choice from at least two meals and salad, vegetable, yoghurt and cheese options are available each day."
Am I to believe that those three slices of cucumber constitute a 'salad'?

Note, however, that the school (including the kitchen staff) have supported her efforts - the ban came from the council.

Also worth noting that through the blog she's raised over £2000 for a charity that provides school dinners for poor kids around the world.
