I may remind you of John Major's only budget speech where he reminded us of uncontrolled credit and his introduction of the TESSA.Originally posted by hyperD View PostWell, thank **** we still have a democracy, whereby we can vote for the bunch of ***** that wave the Blue banner that have the same ****ed up policies as the bunch of ***** that wave the Red banner that have the same ****ed up policies as the bunch of ***** that wave the Yellow banner that have the same ****ed up policies as the bunch of ***** that wave the...

I had a read through the 1990 budget debate...
Mr Major?s Comments During Budget Resolutions and Economic Situation Debate - 26th March 1990
I love the way Major tries to explain repaying national debt...
Mr. Major
As for the future, under the fiscal judgments that have been reached, fiscal policy will knock out a further £17 billion of debt over this year and the next two years. As a result of that, we shall have reduced national debt, which stood at the beginning of this year at around £160 billion, by massive sums in total. That is the reality of the fiscal judgment. Our fiscal strength also means that debt as a proportion of GDP will continue what has been a headlong fall - from 50 per cent. in 1979, to 32 per cent. in 1989 to a forecast of 28 per cent. in 1990. It is now down to levels not seen since the beginning of the first world war. It is hard and intellectually indefensible to suggest that the fiscal position is neither satisfactory nor tight.
Mr. Boateng
We need no lectures from you.
Mr. Major
It is, I grant, unlikely that they will listen, but we shall try.

The global financial crisis is not directly the cause of the problems we are having here.Originally posted by Scoobos View PostI'm not labour but I do wish politicians and voters alike would stop blaming them for the GLOBAL financial crisis . That was due to insane trading of mortgage books by banks internationally, in order to boost a false future income for the idiots to swallow up.
The UK economy had grown very dependant on the financial sector and Labour used the vast tax revenues to prop up the already bloated public sector, but just for good measure Brown and Labour also borrowed vast amounts of money to throw at their supporters.
Government borrowing should only take place in a recession, when the economy is growing the public finances should be balanced.
What is Labour's answer, tax the finance sector very highly so that they up sticks and relocate abroad and so taking their tax revenues with them.
I am very fearful that if Labour get in next time we will sink even more into a mess, IMF being called in, sky high interest rates....."The budget should be balanced, the Treasury should be refilled, public debt should be reduced, the arrogance of officialdom should be tempered and controlled, and the assistance to foreign lands should be curtailed lest Rome become bankrupt. People must again learn to work, instead of living on public assistance." CiceroComment
