At the beginning of March 2012, the installed capacity of wind power in the United Kingdom was 6,580 megawatts (MW), ...

About 100 watts each. Not bad. Like 6 big power stations.

not like 6 big power stations.

only a lunatic would build six big power stations and then say, they will only produce lecky when the wind blows, at the right speed, and we will subsidise them by putting their three times cost onto bills, thereby ensuring an increase in fuel poverty, and by the way, we will have to build a further 6 big power stations to back these ones up for when the wind does not blow.

        lunacy

and we will ruin your view as well

        ugly things

It would be crazy to ignore our windy treasure. And you have to have unused capacity with other power stations too, because people sleep at night, make tea when Coronationenders starts, etc. Anyway, we have little choice apart from nuclear.

if you take the worldwide proportion of wind power lekky and round it to the nearest whole number, the answer is zero

we are being taken for a ride here TW

It supplied 12% of our UK leccie on one day in 2011 according to the Wiki, which is a lot more than 0.

A highlight of 2011 was on 28 December when wind power set a record contribution to the UK's demand for electricity of 12.2%.[10]

The fact that they have to be completely rebuilt every 20 years or so is a never ending concern though. I wonder how long the sea ones will last.

The fact that a single giant turbine can generate 7 MW is also amazing. And they are giant, 150 - 200m diameter or something.

And talking of being ripped off. Is having private companies or the French do our nuclear electric likely to be any better than being ripped off by wind farmers?

                    listen to yourself. One day.

probably a day when we didnt need it either.

                    costing seimans a fair bit

The only safe and cost efficient way forward in power generation for the future is nuclear French built or otherwise. The tech exists to build micro nuclear power stations that would be low maintenance and provide power to individual towns, factories.
