Also anyone can drink alcohol, its only the buying of it that is illegal. I always had the option of a glass of wine or whatever was being drunk by my parents, and frankly I would have one mouthful and go YUCK! So it never became something attractive that I was prohibited from doing.Comment

Part of bringing kids up is getting them to recognise your authority. if you fail to do that, the first time they're down the pub and piss off someone bigger and stronger than them, they're totally taken by surprise when they get punched.
They are not as equipped as a thirty year old to make the correct choices - that's why you have to assist them, by teaching them right and wrong, what's safe, what isn't and what's bloody stupid. OK, some kids will do whatever they want regardless of their parents - so it's not always the parents' faults. But a lot of the time it is.Down with racism. Long live miscegenation!Comment

Some things have worse consequences than other. Some things can last a life time, other things can last a day. Some things can be recovered from, some things cant.
The trick is to allow them enough rope in the little things so they get self confidence, learn from their mistakes and learn that dad is not a tyrant and he can be talked to, whilst steering them sharply away from the damaging stuff(\__/)
