I think the important advice for a 14 year old is not to have sex. It's too young. I accept some will go ahead and do it anyway, but this isn't the stance that should be encouraged IMO.If at first you don't succeed... skydiving is not for you! -
Dunno about that really. Firewalls are always built into routers now days, and I cant even remember the last time I needed an antivirus - probably before I switched to using Chrome.Originally posted by TestMangler View PostLike a firewall and good antivirus ?

But isnt that how kids get pregnant, too much emphasis on the dont and nothing on the how to be safe. You do realise that telling people they cant do something makes it so much more alluring? This applies double to kids.Originally posted by TheBigD View PostI think the important advice for a 14 year old is not to have sex. It's too young. This is why we have a drink problem in our society too.Comment

Good points, although using your logic, why not scrap the minimum age of consent then? Same goes for the Alcohol?Originally posted by escapeUK View PostBut isnt that how kids get pregnant, too much emphasis on the dont and nothing on the how to be safe. Someone may correct me, but arent the consent laws to protect children from predatory adults and not from each other? Have you heard any under 16 year old teens being prosecuted for having sex with each other? I never have.Originally posted by TheBigD View PostGood points, although using your logic, why not scrap the minimum age of consent then? Same goes for the Alcohol?
Also anyone can drink alcohol, its only the buying of it that is illegal. I always had the option of a glass of wine or whatever was being drunk by my parents, and frankly I would have one mouthful and go YUCK! So it never became something attractive that I was prohibited from doing.Comment

I've don't usually tell my kids not to do something. I tell them that certain actions have consequences, and what those consequences might be. I treat them fairly, and we have mutual respect and trust, so recognise that I do know what I'm talking about (sometimes).Originally posted by escapeUK View PostBut isnt that how kids get pregnant, too much emphasis on the dont and nothing on the how to be safe. Part of bringing kids up is getting them to recognise your authority. if you fail to do that, the first time they're down the pub and piss off someone bigger and stronger than them, they're totally taken by surprise when they get punched.
They are not as equipped as a thirty year old to make the correct choices - that's why you have to assist them, by teaching them right and wrong, what's safe, what isn't and what's bloody stupid. OK, some kids will do whatever they want regardless of their parents - so it's not always the parents' faults. But a lot of the time it is.Down with racism. Long live miscegenation!Comment

Some things have worse consequences than other. Some things can last a life time, other things can last a day. Some things can be recovered from, some things cant.
The trick is to allow them enough rope in the little things so they get self confidence, learn from their mistakes and learn that dad is not a tyrant and he can be talked to, whilst steering them sharply away from the damaging stuff(\__/)
