Didn't No 10 get charged £12k or so for a Wordpress site, so not unbelievable

Just cos it's WP doesn't mean there's not alot of customization and content creation gone into it.

Thinking about it find a wordpress host and hunt a suitable theme. for what you want it will do everything you want and let you update it yourself.

And it will look like you did it yourself too. Simple doesn't have to mean crap... you can get a webby guy to do you a simple WP site, but done with a bit of style and branding, for a few hundred quid.

Who's providing the content? If you are paying someone to come up with text that makes you sound reputable, then £10k sounds cheap for the likes of you

As someone else has said, I'd look somewhere cheap (peopleperhour?) and get someone to set up the site using Joomla or Wordpress - which once they have done the initial setup, you can easily add new pages etc. without needing to know much / anything about web design.

It really depends on what you want to do. "I need a website" is the most basic of requirement. Do you want a flash site with lots of animation? or just a plain HTML with lots of tables around.

I am sure you want to do the SEO as the next step, and it really helps in making your first step keeping this in mind, as effective SEO might want to completely redo your whole site. Because this might be a professional site, there might be a lot of work involved and not just doing 4/5 pages. I completely agree with the quote given for what you want to achieve.

Assuming its just 4-5 pages of static content with a contact form I'd do it for £350 plus £25.00/year hosting. Would also be based on a CMS so you can update and add to it as much as you like with no HTML knowledge.

Search Engine Optimisation, be wary of of this as 99% of people who offer you this and guarantee 1st place placement on Google are rip-off merchants. Its the grubby side of the industry but a necessary evil.
