    I am using Win8 on a tablet and in my version there is a "windows" button but that works like the home key of IOS and takes yu to home screen with all the programs laid out as panels. If you install a new program the short cut gets slotted in as a panel on this home screen.

    I installed Firefox and its now a panel and to launch it I go to the home screen and tap the firefix icon. But Firefox isnt optimised for Win8 and its a pain in the ass.

      The button evolved to become the operating system's 'launchpad', offering access to software, files and search functions.

      Earlier test versions of Windows 8 had flattened the recognisable 'orb' - but the new build removes it altogether, according to leaked screenshots from tech site The Verge.

      Microsoft has not announced a release date for the new operating system, built to work with touchscreens as well as on conventional PCs, but it's widely expected to release in the second half of this year. "

      WTF are they smoking at Microsoft?

      This is going to be repeat of:

      MS DOS 4.0
      MS DOS 6.0
      Windows ME
      Vista
      Windows 8
      Have you not noticed a pattern? Every other major version of Windows is tulip.

      95 = Good
      98 = Crap
      98SE = Good
      ME = Crap
      XP = Good
      Vista = Crap
      Win7 = Good
      Win8 = ....

        You missed out Windows 2000, which I am told was quite reasonable.

          That was on the NT/professional thread. ME was the consumer OS at the same time.

            A bit late, they're going tabletty too. Worse, Macs are not necessarily backwards compatible with older versions of OS X (otherwise I'd still be using an older version, I don't like my laptop trying to behave like an iPhone).

              But all Windows OSs since that have been NT-based, thus breaking your pattern: Win2K good, XP good...

                  "shutdown /f" or "shutdown /r" if you just want to reboot or "shutdown /l" to log off

                      Oh no, now we've got months/years of AtW telling us he can't use his computer because he can't learn new things. It's the Ribbon all over again. AtW just buy Office and Win8 for Dummies and you'll be fine.

                      Also, what was wrong with DOS 6?
