Many moons ago, I was a member of MSF (now part of UNITE) - it was that or NALGO (now part of UNISON), and MSF was rather less radical than NALGO. It came very useful when a voluntary redundancy program was announced and my boss told me that I couldn't apply for it, and even if I did, I wouldn't get it. Such ring-fencing was definitely not permitted, so I contacted my union rep, and the union spoke to the boss a couple of levels above mine, and my boss got told. He didn't speak to me again, so that was a result.

It's only worth joining a union if they actually have the leverage you need against management.

You're asking contractors about joining a union!?!?!?

This sockie has gone too far.
As one of the stock answers on here is join PCG which offers much of the same protections as a Union is not that far a reach to ask on here.

FTIW Union's are only good for when you get in trouble, they offer some legal advice and can tie up a good disciplinary procedure like nobody's business, well it is there business in reality. All the other tulip about greater rights etc doesn't only benefit you if you are a member, everyone gets them or no one.

The only union worth joining is the union that a lot your nearby staff members are in. There's absolutely no point in being the only one in a union. That's kind of the point of unions.
