You need specialist HR advice as depending on how you phrase it & if he has any other medical issues (that may not affect his work) he could claim disability discrimination: it’s unlikely just one to watch for.
Is this a record?? a truly helpful piece of advice for once! Thank you

I once worked for a Project Manager who was mentally stable for two days every three weeks. It was quite obvious when he'd been for therapy as he treated people like, well er... people, for a couple of days before reverting to his paranoid schizoid personality.
There's one here as well, but he's not my project manager.

Sounds exactly like the fella we had. Did he start emailing with all caps on ? The odd behaviour started with this chap typing project related emails in full caps and the subject was always "please read:important project related email". Gradually all his emails started to be in full caps.

No, but he does send e-mails at the wierdest times, like ten to two on a Sunday morning (which I only discover on Monday as I spend the weekend having a life). Still, at least it's e-mail and not paper post; I don't have to wipe the stains off before reading it.

Unless this guy is the only person in the workd that can do the job I'd pass him over to be honest. Why is the client even thinking of taking on problems?
"Well Client, we've had the tests done and he's a raging alky. P****d by lunchtime, gets a bit fighty by all accounts"
"OK, we'll go with the 6 month trial period instead of the usual 3 then"
Don't even go there, your opening up a right can of worms, i have worked with 2 alcoholics previously and your asking for trouble even if they appear to be ok on top, the first one was a nice guy but he would go on these almighty benders and then not turn up for several days the company even sent him for councilling when he said he wanted quit and he went for a while but then just dropped out they eventually gave him the lowest job in the department just to keep him employed but eventually they had to get rid of him.
Then the second one had to go to the pub every lunch time regardless of what was going on or where we were, 12:30 everyday right lets get a drink and off he would go and would easily neck 3 pints at lunch and still drive, he was very good at hiding it
I am not saying their all like that it just the experiences i have had with them unless hes in rehab you could have problems, drinks all they think or care about

I've seen directors and senior program managers of banks snorting various substances in the car park at lunchtime. I suppose they need something to keep them going through 18 hour working days.
