All very good points BB, you're right about the accent and therefore being fluent, I was thinking extreme long term.

I'm by no means fluent, but I definitely speak (High) German with a Swiss accent.

Wow guys, lots of useful tips from everyone. A lot to digest and then I'll let you know about my decision. I'll probably target Cologne which I have visited a few times and I love. Aachen is not far away from there and quite cheap but I don't think it offers much. The east is unknown territory. Thanks again.

I did a 4 week intensive course with these guys - Institut für Internationale Kommunikation in Zusammenarbeit mit der Heinrich-Heine-Universität e. V. - a few years ago.

Looking at the site they have longer courses as well up to 10 months.

So it's about 400 euros per month for tuition and then 90 euros a week for your digs which they sort out for you. I stayed in a private room in a 3-bed flat with two other guys.

I did it in Duesseldorf but they also do it in Berlin.

I was 27 at the time and all the others were students with the average age being about 21. Didn't feel out of place though and don't think I would now. I only did it for four weeks but it was a bit like reliving your uni days with all the confidence and experience you have when you are a bit older.

If you can spare the time it's a great way to do it.
