Appears to be a coaching inn within 10 miles that has vacancies and only charging £50/night.

Shame, I was looking forward to a bit of a Bear Grylls type adventure.

Still, could save £250 by opting out of the hotel system. [rubs chin]

Too late for that now - what does the contract say?

My contract states that I get paid expenses plus travel time if I need to travel outside this country, which is what I asked for. Since the client is in India, Germany and the US and hardly has a UK presence, it was fine

Someone I know recently did a short stint in a town and when he went to book a hotel found that he couldn't get anything since something was happening that week.

In the end he tried replying to few spareroom ads offering £50 a night for the few nights he needed. It took 5 attempts before an old couple who were advertising a spare room came back to him and said yes. He had all his meals provided by the old lady and was made to feel very welcome. Not exactly conventional, but thought i'd share it.

I worked with a permie who used to do a weekly commute to his caravan on a nearby site. Not sure why he did it - suspect it wasn't purely about costs but he certainly wasn't expensing it.

Dunno yet. Client contacted me as I've done work for them before. Contract terms yet to be negotiated, though they know working from home is my preferred MO.

Last time I worked for them they were laying people off and were unmovable when it came to rate negotiating at renewal time.

Maybe they'll be different this time if I'm the only one in the country that can do the job, that they have the contact details for.

Work those dating sites - find a different local date for each night, do the needful & as a bonus you ought to get a cooked breakfast out of it.

                  Assumption:
You are attractive enough to warrant a bonk on the first date

                  Mitigation:
Go for the chubby ones to be certain

Doesn't look like it would fit down the typical country lanes found when working "in the middle of nowhere".

Maybe if it had hydraulic suspension it could raise itself above the dry stone walls and oncoming tractors.

After being told of possible work and its location and before I ever sign the contract I always have a look at cost/time to get to clients site either via rail or skyscanner websites and rough hotel prices according to hotels.com or booking.com.

This then gets added to my usual daily rate based upon contract length and forms part of the negotiations of rate, hours expected onsite/working from home possibility etc. and also gives me a rough idea of when I can be onsite i.e arrive around 10 mondays, leave 3pm fridays etc.
