There is a tradition of rivalry between the Scottish and the English. Banter in that tradition is perfectly acceptable. If it becomes racist, in my or other other mod's opinion, it'll be dealt with. Or if it gets tiresome sorting out your squabbles.

When it's used to generally portray Indian nationals in a negative way, I don't think it is acceptable. It wasn't TiroFijo's use of "Bob" that triggered the deletion - and infraction - it was the way he used it, which I considered crossed the line. Similarly, but not quite so far across the line, was Freamon's post. Also deleted, but without infraction - which had nothing to do with any brown envelopes, honest, guv.
Fair enough, but I think the term Bob has been used for non IT types before. I seem to remember that "we were beating Bob at cricket".

It probably has. I don't read every post.

The post in question from TiroFijo, struck me as a bit nasty, especially in conjunction with other posts he's made, so I took what I considered to be appropriate action. He could have PMd me to discuss it if he felt he was being unfairly maligned.

bob is in reference to any Indian worker who interfaces with UK people and to make it more palatable changes their name to a traditional British name. so instead of Venkatanarasimha Rajuvaripet they are called Bob Smith.

In my experience, they choose the first few syllables of their names. For your example - Venkat.
