Watched a program where Paul Simon decribed the chord choices for Graceland, truly mind blowing stuff.

You don't have to like it, you have to understand what supposedly makes it great.Originally posted by sal626 View PostI don’t mind some poetry, but at school I couldn’t stand teachers telling me how great a particular poem is. I get that you like it…why do I have to like it?While you're waiting, read the free novel we sent you. It's a Spanish story about a guy named 'Manual.'Comment

Which is fine….actually it was only a couple of teachers that had this attitude; one even thought of himself as the Robin Williams character from dead poets society, standing on desks, trying to convince us to start an after school poetry club, etc…Comment

Jazz isn't a genre, it's an arrangement. you can take any old tune and jazz it up.
And poetry, well if it strikes a chord it's great, if not it's sh 1 te. Some people get lots of chords struck , like alf, some, not so many.

I hate jazz but was persuaded to play in a trad band (yep, red shirt and sequined waistcoat). Made a fckin fortune playing to middle class audiences. Still don't like it but easy to play and an easy buck. What would you prefer, £500 a day or £500 for two hours?Originally posted by wobbegong View PostAgreed, and while I loathe it as a genre, trad jazz (Dixieland?) is worlds apart from modern jazz, which, as far as I can tell, is just five guys each playing a different tune that they just made up.
