Tube station Hangar Line is horrible - its inside the roundabout and a slightly un-nerving walk to the industrial estate nearby .
I used to come through central London ( from Islington) heading out on the A40. At 07.00 the queue on the A40 into London started at Perivale / sometimes Greenford. Listen out on traffic news for "accident at Polish war memorial "......its quite regular. The queue on any road leading to the Hangar Lane Gyratory ( survival of the fittest , death defying driving ) was always long and could take 20 minutes just to get around the darn thing. From any side and from any time unless it was say 20.00 at night, always traffic.
Lots of sneaky cameras on the A40 so look out for sudden braking as someone spots the camera hidden behind a road sign etc. In addition there is always someone in the outside lane who cuts across 2 lanes of traffic to force their way on to the exit ramp for the gyratory system. Lots of regular accidents there too.
If you can travel in off hours - as someone else said , arrive for 10.00 leave at 19.00 , then you might be Ok . Just dont believe the "mileage vs. average time to do that journey " from any trip calculator.

That particular route, train is a pain in the ass. Easier to drive and warm the earth.

From Odiham it's 45 minutes - 1.15 dependent on traffic & whether you want to hit 100mph on an empty road. Worst is when there's a crash 5 hours home is my worst and you'll get at least a 2/3 hour each month. Always around 2hrs round per day I suppose though.

I used to check to see if the motorway was clear before heading off or then deciding whether the A30 would be better.
How much time do you save by doing 100mph vs legal limit?

18 minutes for every 70 miles.

So that's 36 minutes per day

or 180 minutes per week. Which is 3hrs

          So 156 hours per year

Which is 6.5 days per year at 24 hours, but of course we could equate that to working days at 8 hours which is approx 20 days per year

Which over a working life time of 47 years is 940 working days per year at an average cost of £500 per day(with no increase for ease like) is approximately £500k in total, but assuming an inflation rate of 5% then you are looking at around £1.8Million over a working lifetime or 940 working days of sitting on your ass and watching TV.

          Your point was?

I'd join M3 at 4A, so would miss Fleet services. Or could go A30. Looks like M3 to Sunbury then across via Richmond is a shorter route, but that would probably be worse for traffic.
There are side roads you can use rather than go down Hangar Lane to get where you need to go. If you have a sense of direction and consult a map then you will roughly work out where you need to be. You won't be able to park in the side streets as either there are permit only or they are already full at 7am.

Hangar Lane traffic flows at weird times. The best time to use Hangar Lane is between midnight and 5am.

Don't cut across Richmond as at the moment there are tonnes of road works meaning everyone is taking different routes to avoid them. The traffic is bad normally without them as most people go that way to get onto the M4 or M1.

Thanks all for the helpful responses. Sounds like it's doable, but to expect plenty of 'bad days'.

Golden rule for those who value their time; if you're thinking of driving in London . . . . don't.

Drive to an outlying station and get the train in.

WHS. I seriously would not recommend driving to Hanger Lane from outside London.

It would be more than an hour.

Look at train stations around the area from which you can get to the Central Line and where you may be able to park.

For example, Blackwater to Slough (A30 and A332) by car takes 40 minutes, Slough train to Ealing takes 25 minutes and there's a train every 15 minutes roughly.

I think that journey would be more dependable in duration and you get 25 minutes of standing up exercise per day.

My gf does Ickenham to Ealing everyday so A40 to Perivale then Perivale to Ealing around 8.5miles, can take her anything upto 1.5hrs traffic is horrible, on agood day more like 50mins, it just takes one accident or something and the traffic is screwed. I wouldn't even think about trying to get upto Hanger Lane just come off at Perivale.
