yes in client co, a blue chip household name by the way
all systems are hostname.domain.domain.com as is the case in the .Net world in client co's
so what's the solution ? configure ie to focus on the nth layer of the fqdn ?

No you need to set the cookies and session variables on that nth layer of the fqdn. You could always get your infrastructure people to create cname aliases for the uat server I would be very surprised if they haven't done that already for other departments.
