I´m not normally a Wail fan or a Max Hastings fan, but he´s made some good points there.

But my question is where does all this OTT materialism come from? What use is a pair of expensive trainers if you've already got a pair? What makes it so important to own the latest plasma telly?
And what exactly is wrong with an "ad hominem" argument? Dodgy Agent, 16-5-2014

It is a status thing. This generation uses gangsta rappers and sports stars as its role models.
They have adopted "learned behaviour" from music videos etc. They believe that having the latest clothing, bling and other gear endows them with respec' [sic].
The fact that they nicked it actually enhances their rep within the community.

We have spent years allowing liberal values and social experiments undermine our society.
We have given these people a sense of entitlement and removed any feelings of responsibility or guilt.
This applies in many other places too, not just these rioters.
The society, culture and values of a once great nation are being undermined daily.

One day there will be a backlash, but I am not sure when and I am not sure it will be in time.
        Just saying like.

I could agree with you, but then we would both be wrong!

Is it really about 'this generation'? There are many more decent young people who aren't obsessed with so-called 'status'.
And is it really just the underclass that's so obsessed with 'status'? Look at all the people who've maxed out their credit cards just to buy a brand named handbag sewn together by a 7 year old in Cambodia. Why do so many middle class people think it's great to own a mass produced suit with a dead Italian bloke's name on the label instead of visiting a local tailor, paying local craftsman and keeping the money in their own community, while saving money to boot?

No it is not just about this generation, but an analysis of the whole of society would take far too much time so I have generalised on the masses involved.

There are a number of those caught up in this that do not fit, but I am guessing they have some classic "rebel" condition.

We have a society that idolises the rich and famous and the sheeple seem to think that having a part of what "they" have somehow gives themselves a small part of "their" lifestyle.
