well this is a bit geeky but

I dusted off the old PS3 and steering wheel got out Gt 5 and bought all of the cars of the relevant 'spec'

e.g

TVR Chimera (and T350c and V8S)
Honda S2000
BMW M Coupe (Z3M does not seem to be in the game)
Nissan 350Z
Chrsyler Crossfire
Mercedes CLK
Lotus Elsie 190r
Vauxhall VX220 Turbo
Corvette Grand Sport

I reckon the best had to be the 8 pot TVR's purely for sound

best handling was the Nissan

The S2000 was rapid but a bit twitchy

The merc was rubbish and slow - ditto the Chrysler (although the both had the least BHP anyway).

So there you go resorting science if you want a 2 seater rear wheel drive motor for under 10k get a TVR!

Boxsters are a poor man's Porsche, in fact Porsche should be embarrassed to have their badge on that car.

Honda come on you might like if you're a car geek but seriously you won't be impressing 95% of people with that car.

The Merc is an old man's car. Either that, or you might as well buy a hat because you'll look like a chauffeur.

TVRs are too much in your face and have the reliability of an offshore programmer's code.

It could imply many things, depending on the situation and the context:

1. You live in a council house and spend all your money on cars.
2. You've amassed a massive debt to buy a car
3. You're too poor to afford a more expensive car.
3. You're a shallow fooker who thinks cars matter.

If I had my choice it would purely be based upon how the car drives, looks, how reliable they are and exclusivity / rarity.

It would be a Honda (NSX) or Nissan (GTR) for me, you can keep your 100,000 mass produced Porsches and I'll take the rare, exclusive cars regardless what it says on the badge...

Forget practicality, this is just about the beginning of a mid-life crisis, and I want to enjoy it just a little.

I've had Porsches for years.

I currently have a 993 C2 Coupe pre varioram Tip S, and a 997 4S Cab (Gen2). Had the 993 since 2004 and the Gen2 since new last year.

For that sort of money I'd look at a 993 Turbo or a 993 4S. Wouldnt go for a 997 necessarily, and definately wouldnt touch a 996. The 997 is fast and clinical, whereas the 993 will bite you on the arse if you drive it like an idiot.

Dont be taken in by cheap looking cars on pistonheads or autotrader, they will cost you a packet to put right. Even putting the brakes straight with genuine parts will cost you £1700. Likewise sorting an RMS leak or new clutch around 2k.

The upside of the 993 is you will get your money back when you sell, they have rock solid residuals. The air cooled engines are bullet proof if serviced properly and they take a lot of abuse. The same cant be said of 996s or 7s.

911s in general are the best all round every day performance cars. The Nissans cost a fortune to service and need doing every 6 months or 6000 miles.

Servicing the 997 costs £450 for a minor 20k service, the 993 about the same for a 12k service. Labour costs work out more for the early cars as the air cooled engines are harder to work on.

In my opinion I dont think you will get a better package for the money.

I just gave back a V8 500SL (new shape) which was loaned to me for a couple of weeks and it was fast in a stright line but lacking in every other respect like a lot of other so called sports cars.

And dating you was a cheap alternative to the Peace Corps for those with confidence issues that wanted "to give something back".
