Whats it take to get an early election held in this country?

I reckon if one was called now Labour would be out on its arse...BUT...if they are allowed to go to full term I'm afraid you English just aren't intelligent enough to vote the feckers out!

Last election I could understand how Labour got in...after all they had no real opposition did they...but now? Not so sure Labour could pull it off.

Labour got in at the last election because of the way the constituencies are structured. Technically, Labour did not get the majority of votes but won the most seats. So, the people did vote with their brains but the system let them down.

For the record, I voted for the Legalise Cannibis Campaign for the national elections and the Natural Law Party for the local. Two very worthy candidates.

Gordon takes over as prime minister. Says he needs a mandate from the people to govern so calls a snap election. Labour get less votes than last time but still get a very small workable majority.

Reason why - the boundary changes come in 2008, if he waits till then with the same number of votes he gets 30 less seats. Ladymuck is right !

That's true of virtually every election, if not all. Has the winning party ever got 50% or more of the votes? And yet they get a big majority in the commons and can effectively do whatever they want.

Yes, LadyMuck is on the button with this one. It's all in those boundaries. The Tories effed it up last time: because they managed the boundary discussions at constituency level, leading to safe constituencies wanting to hang on to their Tory areas to stay safe, rather than letting them go to the marginal constituency next door. Labour did theirs centrally, and shared the Labour voters out where they could make most difference.
