I try to feel sorry for him, because he's clearly been duped, but then he did believe in a God that was prepared to commit mass murder in the name of "good" - and seemed fine to go along with it... at which point my sympathy evaoporates.

If everyone contested every fine, they have to outsource the criminal system to India, so at least you could bribe your way out of it

Which was why you got a higher fine - or to be more precise, you got the "correct" sentance as opposed to a reduced sentance for pleading guilty earlier - i.e. taking the fixed penalty.

A fixed penalty notice is basically a "plea bargain" - even though we don't officially have such a thing in the UK. You're fee to argue your case in court, but it will cost you a damn sight more if you lose.
