I didn't realise that as well as positive and negative rep, there was 'grey' neutral rep, giving no points, based, I assume on the worthlessness of the poster. Is that how it works? It seems that our friend russell is wasting his time. 'Loser' indeed.

Exactly. The amount of rep given , both positive and negative, is related to the standing of the person giving it. You will give more neg/pos rep the more positive your own rep is.
