Politicians usually hate being upstaged by royals and celebs. But yesterday the few who were invited were as one in a single, joyous thought: "I'm here, and Blair isn't!"
I imagine they'd have been happy to invite Blair, who after all had one of his "finest hours" supporting the Royal Family after Princess Di's death (as portrayed in that film The Queen); but they couldn't stomach the idea of his ghastly republican wife yawning through the ceremony.

I wonder why el Gordo wasn't invited.
The official line is that neither of them are Knights of the Garter, hence were not far enough up the pecking order to score an invite. Call me Dave and Compo ^H^H^H^H^H Clegg were invited as serving prime ministers and Maggie and Majors as they do have Knighthoods.
