What I don't understand is if they are all so devout now how come they allow the women to drive and don't make them walk three paces behind?

The French are a bit like the Septics which is why they don't get on. There are powerful lobbies in both countries trying to enforce State secularism alongside a lot of religious observers.

France has banned all religious symbols in public places and in schools so it's not just singling out Muslims.

They don't. at school-end it's a mad rush to get the best kids, like when the guy in Tesco restocks the reduced section.

In Saudi Arabia they discriminate on the basis of age, sex and race and we do not question it. Yet we allow them to continue with their stoneage so called customs here. We live in an advanced democratic society they do not. The wearing of the burkha is as sexist a practice there is. if these people want women to wear burkhas then let them do so-back in saudi.

The wearing of the burkha is one up from female circumcision. At least circumcised women can develop relationships with other people and go for job interviews.

Agree but it isn't in itself a very serious issue and is perhaps putting even more pressure on the women. The suicide/self harm rate of Muslim women is already 2 to 3 times the national rate and they don't deserve it, it's their awful menfolk who are the real problem.

I'd be a bit more impressed if the West would deal with what's important, like halting immigration of those who don't respect our values, outlawing forced marriage and getting rid of the radical preachers and teachers.

I dont quite agree with you. I think we should concentrate on the small aspects of their what they call "customs". Those that are at odds with our own. The wearing of the Bhurka is probably enforced as much by women as by men. I am pretty sure that Burkha wearing women become institutionalised by what they wear and cannot stand other younger women, say (their daughters) enjoying freedoms they did not. It would also send a message that if people wish to come and live here they do so under our terms and not theirs. they will respect this. The outlawing of the wearing of the burkha is absolutely the right thing to do.
