    Can we move on?

Yeah, what about me, I've go no income, let alone £100s per day contract work plus rental income from flats. If worst comes to the worst doodab can get a tent and pitch next to me and we can take it in turns guarding the tents while the other goes looking for food thrown out by the supermarkets. Boomed.

Will you be able to actually do that if you both aren't on board with how your finances look?

And.... stop being such a snob. Having Ikea furniture isn't the end of the world. I'm sure your son would rather you could afford to have a life with him than be working your arse off just so you can have some overpriced tulipe that you can't actually afford.
I'm not being a snob, I'm just pointing out that if I rent a flat "through the proper channels" I will need to buy furniture, because it won't come with any.

Sorry doodab, I'm with fish face on this one.

The crux of the matter is you need (both of you) to live within your means in either UK or Germany. Loads of people have offered good advice but I don't think you are interested in tightening your belt. You just want a quick fix. Nothing wrong with that but it's unlikely to happen

What about me, I've had to sell my sports car, cut down on fine wines and only watch free porn.

OK so that is the first thing SHE should suggest.

            How about the rest?

Understand the good school argument, but if you don't sort it then a good home is an issue?

I think I'm with you on this one. There appears to be very little choice, so she needs to get her head out of the sand and realise it's either move somewhere else in the UK (which might not solve the problems) or trial living in Germany, as she can't know she won't like it until she gives it a go. It makes sense on other levels too, including the fact that your son would see more of his daddy.

That's part of the problem, for sure. It's very much the case that our finances are separate, we don't have a joint account or anything like that and I've no real idea what the situation is with her flats.

Hmm, I'm not sure it's about tightening the belt so much as one income not being able to fund two homes/pay off debts/provide savings?

I actually look like a fish, so I find that quite insulting.

I don't think having joint accounts are always necessary (in fact, I'd never do it again). But, I would have thought it best for both partners to be transparent about finances, especially in your sort of situation?
