I would do no such thing but rather offer the opinion that you are arse licking AtW in the hope that you might get some of his VC money before it is all spent.

While you're waiting, read the free novel we sent you. It's a Spanish story about a guy named 'Manual.'

No I'm buttering him up (not on the arse!) to get advice how to make HMRC give me free money too.

In a nutshell, you have to do actual research and development that pushes forward the state of the art. You can't just learn how to do something that other people already know how to do.

That part isn't a problem, the stuff I work already does this but it's work I bill for so not sure it's R&D... but I could do similar work as a plan B if HMRC will pay for it
I'm more concerned that it seems you have to open up your work to the public, since advancing science is only the case if other people can see what you're up to.

                  Subcontractors
You can't claim R&D Relief under the SME Scheme if you are a subcontractor - that is, if you have been subcontracted to do the work on behalf of somebody else. But, even if your company is small or medium-sized, you may still be able to claim, as a subcontractor, under the Large Company Scheme.
I don't think you necessarily need to open your work up to the public, actually one of the conditions is that your company has to own all the IP generated.

HM Revenue & Customs: Research and Development (R&D) Relief for Corporation Tax

                  Actually it also says

HMRC accepts that where the terms of R&D require that the IP is to be placed in the public domain then the condition is satisfied.

It's hard to claim - my view is that it that relief was created specifically to appease pharma industry.

Well I work in a related field - medical - so we'll see. If it ever gets anywhere I'll report back for anyone who gives a damn.
