That's happened to me in the past on previous quitting attempts. The booze seems to go down 10 times quicker without the smoking in the way. I'm not drinking much these days though so shouldn't be a big problem

That's because you're smoking. As soon as you quit you'll become an alcoholic.
      Hard Brexit now!

Smoked for decades, the longest previous cold turkey attempt lasted no more than half a day.
Stopped using patches quite recently, can't say I feel any difference, just before I had fags, now it is just a patch every morning, nothing else has changed. No stress, no disorientation, no cravings.
I wonder if it will be as easy to stop using patches later on ?

A guy at cliento smokes (or "water vapours") them. They work out a lot cheaper than baccy, and have no tar and other such things some people worry about.
Yes. I've not had a tobacco smoke since 4th of Jan 2010. I used to chain smoke while driving and get through 30-40 a day if at home. I swapped without really intending to, I thought I'd give them a try and found I'd replaced smoking.

Admittedly a lot of those kits are utter rubbish, but there are good electronic cigarette products out there.
Incidentally the vapour being 100% water is complete bollocks, it's vapourised propelyene glycol or vegetable glycerine, a small percentage of water, a tiny percentage of flavouring and nicotine. The glycol and glycerine are used in smoke machines in clubs/gigs etc so don't present a known risk. The tar, carbon monoxide and numerous poisonous and carcinogenic nasties in tobacco smoke are of course missing.

One handy plus is that they're perfectly legal to "smoke" in workplaces, pubs, aircraft, trains etc

I tried all sorts; patches, those stupid fake cigarettes (that make you look like a ponce), microtabs, the minis, chewing gum, citrix, zyban; I ended up being addicted to the chewing gum, then starting again.
Until last summer, when I just decided enough was enough, and stopped with no NRT. Threw out the lighters, smokes, ashtrays. Was properly gnarly for about 2 weeks... and have suffered nothing since.
I think you have to just mentally bring closure to the whole thing - you have to be in the right frame of mind to say 'sod it', and give it in, and not let it concern you any more.

While you're waiting, read the free novel we sent you. It's a Spanish story about a guy named 'Manual.'
