That's about 200m. Just having a look at google earth to see how far I'd have to row if I was Fijian.

Edit: If you are lucky, 5-10 miles. If you're unlucky, about 80, based on a few random samples.

Well for a lot of the islands you can head 4-5 miles out to see and be in water 2000m deep so hopping in the boat and rowing like a crazy man is probably the best idea if you live on an atoll.

If you are in a boat it is safer to be on deep ocean sea as the deeper the water the less the wave will break, you may not even notice the tsunami go under you. The most dangerous place is in shallow water and near the coast.
