    Edit: although clearly this earthquake is no laughing matter, and not just for the Japanese looking at that wave. Holy tulip!

    While you're waiting, read the free novel we sent you. It's a Spanish story about a guy named 'Manual.'

          I heard a joke once, however I am not at liberty to repeat it.

            New Zealand Earthquake 2011 was a magnitude 6.3

            Sendai earthquake, Japan 2011 magnitude 8.9

            Difference = 8.9 - 6.3 = 2.6

            Power (shaking about amplitude) ratio = 10^2.6 = 400 times.

            Energy (destructive) potential ratio = (10^2.6)^3/2 = 8000 times.

            A bit bigger then.

              8.8 reported now. But yikes. I only found out because Google.com has it on their homepage as an announcement.

              Does it make me a total scumbag I hope they get better footage than of the tsunami a few years back? Part of me simply wants to watch awestruck at HD video of what nature can do.
              I also want to see video of buildings surviving a huge quake, to show how impressive the engineering is.

                Yep; many people don't realise tht the richter scale is a logarithmic scale.

                Perhaps a seperate scale is needed to describe earthquakes in layman´s terms.
                And what exactly is wrong with an "ad hominem" argument? Dodgy Agent, 16-5-2014

                    It also means you can have 'earthquakes' with a negative Richter number. Wow, that was a -1! Did the earth move for you dear.

                      there are other confusing factors, like the depth , duration and aftershocks.

                      the best measure is probably the effect on the currency afterall
