Have you considered asking his parents what he'd like?
Other than that Playmobil is a good toy for 4 year olds and they have a huge range of stuff.
Good luck - but he'll end up playing with the box anyway
I'm sorry, but I'll make no apologies for this

Playmobil, Lego, Brio wooden trains are all good solid toys.
My little one is completely mad about the octonauts and all forms of marine life at the moment, so you could go for one of their books if he's into that. The toys aren't going to be available for a while yet though. The Gruffalo is another favourite if he doesn't have that already.
Chess might be a bit much but dominoes or draughts are good games for a four year old. While you're waiting, read the free novel we sent you. It's a Spanish story about a guy named 'Manual.'Comment

Almost 30 years laters, I'm still lovin' it.Originally posted by PRC1964 View PostA four year old boy will love a ball and a goal, or a ball and a bat, or a ball and a net.
To put it simply, they like playing with balls.
Or, if you're serious, get him Thomas Aquadraw (bit beyond the budget w/o discounts) or Stomp Rocket.Comment

JJB or someone sells a pack of 3 balls i.e. football, basketball and rugby ball. They are the right size for most 4 year olds and according to one of my now teenage nephews' it was one of his favourite birthday presents.
The only other thing you can do is take the kid out somewhere - this gets you into his parents good books if you manage it well, and he will remember it particularly if you take him by say train when he is normally driven everywhere."You’re just a bad memory who doesn’t know when to go away" JRComment
