When I was younger, my dad used to get a free upgrade on most flights as a frequent flyer.

i used to feel that way until i went through the experience with my own kids - now it doesn't bother me at all. in fact if i'm sitting near i'll offer to assist. being less selfish will immediately lessen the irritation.

It's hardly selfish on the part of the person being irritated by a screaming kid. At least in a restaurant you can move or leave the premises, try leaving a plane and everyone starts screaming.
