    Here Comes the Sun ?

    Sep 20 2010

BBC News - Newsnight - Are solar flares a real threat?

    Today - 16th Feb 2011

The British Geological Survey (BGS) has issued a geomagnetic storm warning, and says observers might be able to see aurorae from the northern UK.

The monster flare was recorded at 0156 GMT on 15 February and directed at the Earth. According to the US space agency, the source of this activity - sunspot 1158 - is growing rapidly.

BBC News - Sun unleashes huge solar flare towards Earth

    Today

Scientists around the world will be watching closely as three eruptions from the Sun reach the Earth over Thursday and Friday.

These "coronal mass ejections" will slam into the Earth's magnetic shield.

The waves of charged solar particles are the result of three solar flares directed at Earth in recent days, including the most powerful since 2006.

The biggest flares can disrupt technology, including power grids, communications systems and satellites.

That sounds like one of you-know-who's secret cunning plans.

It is ridiculous the earth has a magnetic field. Who uses compasses anymore? About time it's replaced by a giant Satnav transmitter.

PS Cant' be arsed to find it but read recently that the movement of the North pole has greatly speeded up in recent years and the field may flip, leaving us without one for some time. Best get out the tinfoil.
