I'm toying with the idea of either a Galaxy S 4G or Blackberry Torch (9800), used prepaid.

Which would people recommend out of those two?

The Nokia N8, with its 12 Megapixel camera, looks tempting; but if Nokia are throwing Symbian overboard one has to think twice.

Before that I had a lot of Nokias, some were excellent, and most of them were decent phones. None of them was nearly as tulip as the N97. It is embarrassingly crap, sometimes I switch it off then on to reset it, then try and send an SMS and it tells me it's out of memory. WTF?

If I want to take photos, I have a DSLR, a little compact digicam, two film SLRs and a decent (SD) video camera. If one of them could make phone calls I would carry it in preference to the N97.
That out of memory is a common fault on the N97 - I take it you have moved your apps to the big drive and unistalled all the crappy demos that you get. I uninstalled loads of stuff, including Nokia Maps to give about 20mb free on C: and told the internet part not to store anything. It's pretty stable now. Still rubbish, but pretty stable!
Rule Number 1 - Assuming that you have a valid contract in place always try to get your poo onto your timesheet, provided that the timesheet is valid for your current contract and covers the period of time that you are billing for.

      I preferred version 1!

Is it just a problem of software? Brought a new cheapish (no suprise) phone a few months back and was put off Nokia by comments on the poor keypads.

          You've dismissed getting a Nexus S then?

          I'm loving mine

Much much better signal than my iPhone buddies.

I'd recommend it but then everyone will end up with one, like the iPhone !

Actually, I think I did sort a lot of stuff out in the dim and distant past but since then it has broken and been "repaired" which of course means it's been filled up with crap again.

              I shall look into that.

              Ta.

All the reviews and articles on Nokia I read say build quality, call quality and the actual hardware are still where Nokia stand out, let down by their clunky old OS. However, any smartphone is going to suck on batteries, so don't buy a smartphone.

That's like saying you wouldn't try W7 because Millenium was no good.
