It should be doing things that commercial TV would not - education for example, it should not be the job of the BBC to chase ratings and pay mega-salaries in order to get max market share.

Specifically when it comes to this "Dragons Den" program I I find that it is an insult to British enterpreneures.

You could argue that it is education, perhaps it can be seen as educating a new generation regarding business and finance, personally I think that is a good thing, we need growth from businesses to get us out of the mess we are in.

That program is not educating at all and it does nothing to encourage enterpreneurship - if they wanted to do that they'd make a program how to build a business WITHOUT having to beg money from VCs at such an early stage.

Yes, totally agree, it's not about the business, it's a charade: it's an entertainment programme in the same sense as Top Gear is not a factual programme about cars, it's about entertainment, despite being named most popular factual show at the National TV Awards - hah, the irony.

That's the illusion of TV - you have a message, you find the footage that fits the facts for instance.

Still, for £145.50 it's reasonably good value if you like that sort of banal, mind numbing bollox. Me? I prefer watching bluray DVDs, Top Gear and other videos on my TV so that's where some of that £145.50 tax saving goes into, the rest is squandered on beer and no women.

Which is what the dragons often advise people who come on the show.

So the BBC should only make educational programs? In that case, hardly anyone would watch. Also, note that the BBC makes money selling programs overseas, Top Gear being the best example. I can't remember if DD is a BBC invention sold to other nations though.

Either way AtW, got to admire your conviction that because you don't like the programs the BBC makes, their whole motivation for existing is wrong. You sure think a lot of yourself.

I like a number of BBC programs - for example they are very good with programs about nature, some of the best British classics were made by BBC all that is great, but BBC is in a unique position which is being taxpayer funded they should not have to do things for ratings - all those tulipe "talent" competition shows.

btw I don't like Top Gear either but it is nothing like as bad as the Dragons - they take the piss at cars, but it's nothing compared with humiliation dished out to those crazy people who agree to go on the Dragons show - boycott is the most appropriate action.

Nope, I never applied - I never liked them before SKA and once SKA started I was not their target market, but I've got some plans involves those "Dragons" for after SKA

Now Stanford and Harvard were those I did apply!
