For some reason I pictured the dog as a Basset hound (in a bedroom, before I read the post)

Jacks are incredibly tough - My uncle claimed his could sink its teeth into the tyres of the postman's van, while the postman was driving it down the drive. I know it certainly tried its damndest each morning.
