Having read a fair chunk of his books, I don't think I could cope with the all night sessions on whisky and sleeping in the armchair.

However on watching an episode of The Professionals last night, at one time I could have seen myself as Doyle. I was very fit in my younger days and could definitely imagine myself driving like a maniac and leaping over garden walls in pursuit of a villain. Not keen on the shooters though, especially if they'd been pointed at me.

Jason Bourne definitely appeals as an action man, with political intrigue and lots of dosh thrown in. I could definitely handle the international travel and dosh part. Here again, in real life I wouldn't have been too keen on the bit where baddies try to rub me out (but like to imagine I could have talked my way out of many a jam).

Do you mean 'socialism' (state ownership & control of the means of production) or 'totalitarianism' (total subservience to the state)?

The stuff that makes us afraid (Police removing their id badges before battering people, DNA databases, ID cards, cameras everwhere, etc.) are features of British life implemented by parties from both sides of the Commons.

Any particular sort you'd like? A people's popular rising? National socialism would sort out the transport system and economy. Military dictatorship? A return to feudalism? A monarchy might be fun for a few years. Sharia law? French invasion? A chav's revolt? Independence and home rule for the Celts, Picts, Cornish and Essex folk? Or just a general rounding-up and mass killing of those you don't like the look of - the Cheshire salt mines could be operated by manual labour, you know!

If someone breaks into my house and gets caught with DNA evidence then I am quite happy for the police to beat the poor ****er black and blue with their badges off. You would probably give him a hug.
