Child benefits and teenagers earning a few euros for a paper round certainly make an important difference to many households' incomes though.Originally posted by ThomasSoerensen View Postchildren do not receive incomesAnd what exactly is wrong with an "ad hominem" argument? Office of National Statistics 2010 ASHE report states Median averages.Guy Fawkes - "The last man to enter Parliament with honourable intentions."Comment

A median is perhaps a worthwhile statistic, but more worthwhile is to have a set of quality of life levels. For example, for x euros/pounds/groats you can hire a simple home, clothe, clean and feed yourself and get health insurance. For 1.5x you can have all that plus a 2 week holiday in the sun and you can do some educational course to improve your earning capacity. For 2x you can have all that plus live in a house of some defined size, go out to a restaurant twice a month, be a member of a club for your hobbies, buy a basic new car every few years and save 10% for the future, etcetera etcetera until about 100x where you live like a king. You need to know how many people are in each of those categories to judge the chance of socio-economic breakdown or cohesion.Originally posted by ThomasSoerensen View Postwith your dataset you have 3 people getting by on less than the median.
With the dataset of the german population of 80 million, assuming 80% get an income, how many people do you calculate get by on less than the median income? And what exactly is wrong with an "ad hominem" argument? Dodgy Agent, 16-5-2014Comment

I am not afraid of Joe Bloggs causing unrest. I more feel like I have discovered I live in a bubble of delusion I never saw before (in my time as a contractor). I still think my usual invoices are for a large amount of money but I genereally do not think I live an extravagant lifestyle. Basically I thought I identified woth Joe Bloggs to some degree.Originally posted by Mich the Tester View PostI think what OP's getting at is a mythical Joe Bloggs, how much that Joe Bloggs is earning, and whether it's enough to keep Joe Bloggs respectably housed, fed and entertained so that he doesn't start causing big problems for the rest of us. Of course, you then need to know how many people fit into a certain bandwidth of Joe Bloggs' financial situation, to find out whether the peaceful lives of the middle and upper classes might be threatened by growing social or political unrest.
I have just spoken to me clientco coworker about the salary table sasguru liked to and he informed me that he, with 10 years experience, is earning just over 4000 EUR gross per month. Net is is about 2800 EUR. So the salary table seems fairly representative.
Now I like being a contractor even more."Condoms should come with a free pack of earplugs."Comment

That's just because you are elitist and a snob, like many on CUK, living in theirOriginally posted by Mich the Tester View PostAsk yourself; when did you last meet someone earning and living off or providing for a family from an average or below average wage? OK, maybe you spoke to a young colleague who's only just starting out in the workplace, but that's different if that person has the chances to move upwards. I mean people who work 40 hours a week for minimum wage. I haven't met one for years. Everybody in my social or business circle is doing pretty well compared to the lowest earners. There's not just a complete economic disconnect, but a complete social disconnect.enclavesnew-build estates. Although Mich, I'm surprised that as a rugby player there aren't more commoners in your circle?
BTW, the mean/median wage isn't equivalent to working on minimum wage (in the UK). So you don't have to be friends with burger-flippers to know people on the average wage, many professional jobs pay well under £20k up in't'North.Originally posted by MaryPoppinsI'd still not breastfeed a naziOriginally posted by vetranUrine is quite nourishingComment

OK, 2 people then. £2600 after tax for a household is a long way from poverty level.Originally posted by sasguru View PostDo 3 or 4 adults usually cohabit together? Mich's point is well taken however.
£40K in Sheffield for example (where you can buy a decent flat/house for £120K) is probably better than earning £60-70K in London.
And someone in an OK council estate on £25K may feel very comfortable indeed with their subsidised rent.
PS Have you seen some of the cars parked outside council estates? Obviously need their fooking rent raised, the scabby skivers.Hard Brexit now!

Isn't this what they do when they adjust for purchasing power parity? like List of countries by average wage - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia although this is only full time wages - so covering far from all adultsOriginally posted by Mich the Tester View PostA median is perhaps a worthwhile statistic, but more worthwhile is to have a set of quality of life levels.
