I grew up in a staunchly tory hating family. During the Thatcher years I was a teenager. I loathed her then, and all that she stood for.
However, as an adult, I can get beyond the personality, the mistakes that she did make, and the callousness she displayed and see that for the most part she was good for Britain. Her main achievement was breaking the power of the unions. It needed to be done. You may well disagree with me of course. But one thing I think sets her apart: I never got the sense that she was trying to please enough of the population to stay in power (as has been the case with most politicians since her fall). She was doing what she thought was right. And that kind of integrity is sadly missing in todays politicos.
